Under the Health Professions Registration Act 2005, matters leading to cancellation and suspension must now be referred to VCAT. Other matters such as notification / complaints made about pharmacists are investigated and dealt with at professional standards panel hearings conducted by the Board. Under the provisions of the Health Professions Registration Act 2005 the identity of a notifier must not be disclosed. In a similar manner the Board in reporting the outcome of Professional Standards Panel Hearings is not obliged to identify the pharmacists involved but publishes a selection of reports to assist pharmacists in adopting procedures and heeding the lessons to be learned from these cases to minimise the possibility of repetition.
Prior to 1 July 2007, the Board conducted formal hearings under the Pharmacy Practice Act 2004. Prior to 1 July 2005, the Board conducted inquiries under the Pharmacists Act 1974.
