Registration

The Health Professions Registration Act 2005* outlines the types of registration the Pharmacy Board of Victoria may grant to applicants.  The types of registration and persons entitled to or requiring those types of registrations are:

General Registration
(section 6)

 

Practising pharmacists (pharmacists providing pharmacy services).

Non-practising Registration
(section 11)

 

Non-practising pharmacists.

Provisional Registration
(section 9)

Graduates of an approved pharmacy course who are required to undertake supervised practice for general registration as part of the pre-registration requirements, and pharmacists returning to practice.

 

Specific Registration
(section 7)

 

Persons who do not qualify for general registration but meet the criteria outlined in Section 7 of the Act.

Endorsement of Registration
(sections 26 & 29)

Eligible pharmacists to permit them to use, sell or supply (but not prescribe), Schedule 1 poisons within the meaning of the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act 1981.

 

Interim Registration
(section 10)

 

Granted to applicants for registration until the Board considers the application.

Student Registration
(section 8)

Students undertaking an approved pharmacy course required for general registration.

Interim registration may be granted to applicants for registration if applicants are entitled to registration before the Board has considered their applications.  Interim general registration entitles a pharmacist with to provide pharmacy services and an interim provisional registration entitles a pharmacist to undertake supervised practice until the Board grants their registrations. 

Where the Registrar grants interim registration, each registered pharmacist will be provided with an interim registration certificate.  An annual registration card is provided to the pharmacist is granted by the Board.  A pharmacist must sign and present their registration card in instances when proof of current registration is required.

The Registrar may refuse to grant interim registration and refer the application to the Board for its consideration at its next meeting.  Click here for further information.

Conditions on registration may be imposed by the Registrar or the Board for any category of registration.  Where the category of registration involves the provision of pharmacy services by a registered pharmacist, this includes conditions regarding professional indemnity insurance.
